Digital hearing aid launched

Digital hearing aids major, Widex India would start commercial production of computerised cell within two years and also invest Rs.10 crore to expand its activities across the country, a senior company official said.

The Chandigarh-based company, a joint venture with Widex A/S of Denmark, however, had no plans to enter into manufacturing of hearing aids in India, its managing director, T.S.Anand told reporters last night here.

Anand, who was here in connection with the launch of the smallest digital hearing aid 'Senso Vita', said hearing aids market in India was estimated to be around Rs.30 crore and growing at a rate of 10 per cent annually.

With a 60 per cent market share, the company was importing device to cater to Indian market and the cell making unit would be commenced in early 2007 at Chandigarh, he said.

Saying that Widex was working towards bringing social awareness about hearing impairment, particularly caused by increasing noise pollution, Anand said the company was planning to tie-up with NGOs, schools and sponsorship for less privileged, professional conferences to enable people to remove all apprehensions regarding the use of hearing aids.

There was also plan to open a Widex Academy to train dealers, dispensers and audiologists in the intricacies of modern hearing aids and keep them updated in the latest developments in the field of audiology, Anand said.
