Keep it down, European employers told

Loud noise at work can lead to hearing loss, accidents and stress, the EU executive commission said this week, launching a campaign to raise awareness before tougher rules come into force next year.

Employers across the European Union must set workplace noise levels at a maximum of 87 decibels from next year -- less than the sound of a power lawnmower.

The commission said 13 million employees in the 15 countries that made up the bloc before its enlargement have hearing problems due to high noise levels at work.

The new directive must be implemented by all 25 EU states by next February.
