Colleges to host interpreter boot camp
Tyler Junior College and the University of Arkansas are co-hosting the second annual Interpreter Boot Camp, June 1-3 on the TJC campus.
The three-day workshop is for sign language interpreters or students who are learning American Sign Language.
The boot camp costs $90, which includes breakfast, lunch, snacks, a T-shirt and workshop materials. People who do not want to attend all three days can pay $40 per day.
Sara Hague, who holds a level III interpreting certification from the National Association of the Deaf, will present "Constructive Feedback: Sharpening Our Skills Without Shredding Our Confidence" on June 1.
Hue Adams, a motivational speaker, will also present on the first day of the boot camp. Peggy Gray and Kim Weider, who are both certified interpreters through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, will present "Interpreting vs. Transliterating" on June 2.
RID certified interpreter David Evans will present the last day of the boot camp, which will be held in the Apache Rooms in Rogers Student Center.
People can stay in the TJC dorms while attending the boot camp for $12 a night.
"If you are traveling from out of town, this may help with your arrival time for the next day," said Holli King, TJC workshop coordinator.
Professionals can receive 1.8 continuing education units for the three-day workshop.
The deadline to register is Wednesday. For more information, contact Holli King at (903) 510-2841 or hkin@tjc.edu.
