New sign language interpreters in Las Tunas, Cuba
Las Tunas -- A group of 19 sign language interpreters received their diplomas in Cuba's eastern province of Las Tunas on Wednesday.
Besides interpretation, the graduates have been trained in communication theory and techniques and the culture of the deaf community.
Their work will contribute to the integration into society of deaf and hearing-impaired people by helping them prepare and develop themselves professionally and intellectually.
In all eight Las Tunas municipalities, people with this kind of disability are assisted by interpreters. In addition there is a provincial coordinator for their activities, and an interpreter-guide for blind and deaf people.
Among the actions carried out in Las Tunas for the deaf is a modern classroom at the Pelayo Paneque School where hearing impaired children under five receive early stimulation. Courses are also available at the local headquarters of the Association of the Deaf, where parents are instructed on topics related to hearing impaired children.
