Plane crash leaves deaf pilot injured but okay

EDGARTOWN, MA - A small plane flown by a deaf pilot crashed at 1:15 Thursday afternoon during its landing at Katama Airfield on Martha's Vineyard.

The pilot and two others on board suffered injuries -- one seriously. They were treated at Martha's Vineyard Hospital, then later transported to Boston.

The plane is owned by a flying club in New Jersey. The owner of the club, Jim Barrett, tells the Cape Cod Times that the pilot is the only deaf pilot in his club and doesn't have a history of accidents.

A hearing impaired person may fly alone into airports that don't require radio communication between the pilot and the airport.

Katama is one such airport.
