Small steps to success

Bahrain -- Six hearing-impaired children who are moving on from a special centre to mainstream primary schools were honoured yesterday. The ceremony was held at the Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud Hearing and Speech Development Centre's kindergarten in Sanad.

Awards were also presented to five former pupils for outstanding performances after moving on to government primary schools.

Commerce and Industry Minister and Bahrain Society for Child Development chairman Dr Hassan Fakhro, Health Minister Dr Nada Haffadh, National Assembly members, parents and guests attended the event.

Dr Fakhro congratulated the third group of children to move up from the kindergarten, set up to teach them to lip-read and speak clearly, among other skills, so they can take their place in mainstream schools.

Since its establishment in 1994, the centre has been instrumental in integrating 34 children with hearing and speaking difficulties into government schools, said Dr Fakhro.

Centre president Dr Fouad Shehab thanked the staff and praised the Bahraini community's support.

He congratulated the children, aged five or six, for their efforts, which he said would result in their contribution to the country's development.

Dr Fakhro presented certificates to the children and wished them further success.

The graduating children were Ahmed Omran, Dua'a Ali Hassan, Zainab Al Fadhel, Ali Khamis, Mariam Isa Al Mulah and Narjis Mohammed Hassan.

The former pupils were Amnih Majid Al Majid, Ayesha Abdulrahman Ahmed, Moza Fuad Awadh, Eman Al Zahir and Ali Abbas Radhi, aged six and above.
