Right to hear for the hearing impaired

Hyderabad -- The State Government is planning to set up a Right to Hearing Society to aid those who have hearing disabilities.

The new body is modelled on the lines of the Right to Sight Society in the State. A governing body for the society has been formed and other modalities are being worked out.

This was disclosed by Dr M V Appa Rao, president of Andhra Pradesh branch of the Association of Otolaryngologists of India (AOI) and also of Andhra Pradesh ENT Surgeons’ Association.

Speaking at the three-day international workshop on ‘‘Cochlear Implant and Advanced Otology, being organised by the AOI at the Government ENT Hospital at Koti here, he stressed the need for indigenous implants to make cochlear implants accessible to the poor. The implant, which helps restore hearing, now costs over Rs 5 lakh.

Dr A B N Rao, the first superintendent of the ENT Hospital who was the chief guest, said that cochlear implantation is a specialised area and requires careful handling from the surgeons.

The government should take steps to set up a hearing aid manufacturing company in the city to make them affordable to the poor. There is a need for more schools for the deaf, he said.

Dr Murli Mohan, additional director of the Directorate of Medical Education, said that early intervention will help the children overcome language and speech difficulties.
