Rochester remembers Peter Jennings

For 22 years, his voice steered Americans through tough times. For that reason and many others, the country today is remembering ABC news anchorman Peter Jennings, who died Sunday night.

Jennings not only came into Rochester-area living rooms every night, he also visited Rochester twice, most recently 19 years ago when he spoke at the National Institute for the Deaf at RIT and received a warm welcome. ABC and Channel 13 among the first to offer close captioning for the hearing impaired.

13WHAM anchorman Don Alhart interviewed Peter Jennings when the two were both covering Pope John Paul's visit to New York City ten years ago.

Don and Peter talked about how he was involved in the daily content of his newscast and "getting it right."

ABC's Prime Time Live will present a special two-hour tribute to Jennings on Wednesday, August 10 starting at 8:00 p.m. on 13WHAM (it was originally scheduled for Tuesday night.)
