Sign language course to improve teaching methods
Awang Semaun Secondary School recently hosted a four-day sign language introductory course, organised by Programme for Children with High Support Needs (HSN) Section for the Hearing Impaired, Special Education Unit of the Ministry of Education.
The course aimed at fostering better relationship between the teachers and hearing-impaired students as well as ensuring teachers are able to communicate and interact with the students using proper sign language.
The workshop, which ended yesterday, brought together over 50 teachers from schools in the Brunei-Muara District.
On hand to conduct the course were officials from the Special Education Unit, Cikgu Hjh Norbayah Hj Shahminan and Hjh Mariana Abdullah.
According to organiser Cikgu Haziq, "One of the major problems faced by teachers in Awang Semaun Secondary School is having to interact with hearing impaired students. Some teachers have trouble in understanding the students and conveying messages to these students. Therefore, this workshop was held to help teachers as well as students cope with this problem."
During the span of the workshop, teachers were exposed to the workings of the classroom setting and experimented with the difficulties faced by the students.
At the end of the workshop, assessments were given to determine the credibility of the teachers that participated in the course.
Certificates of participation were also handed to the teachers by deputy principal of Awang Semaun Secondary School Chong Li Chen.
