Hearing loss comes early for iPod generation
Doctors now say your kids could be at risk of losing their hearing at a surprisingly early age. They're blaming it on how many kids and teens are listening to iPod's and using cell phones.
Whether he's headed to work or working out, Brian Deets likes to listen to music, " Lately I've been listening to The Killers...Coldplay if I have a long work out...stuff that rocks." Like many young people today, Brian prefers to listen to his music using headphones that fit inside his ears and according to many hearing specialists, this puts him at risk of damaging his hearing--permanently.
Unlike the headphones sported by previous generations, experts say insertable headphones can produce sound levels nearly nine decibels higher than the other kind. They say that's about the difference between the sound of an alarm clock and the sound of a lawn mower. But the problem isn't just that people are listening louder these days, they're also listening longer.
Doctors say the easiest way to make sure your not doing too much damage is to ask people around you if they've noticed you having a more difficult time hearing normal conversation.
