'Iqbal' inspires NCERT to introduce sign language

Filmmaker Subhash Ghai's critically acclaimed venture 'Iqbal', story of a deaf and mute youth who aspires to become a cricketer, has inspired the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to introduce sign language for Standard three students.

Besides, the Central Government agency has, for the first time, introduced a Hind poem, 'Tumhare Liye', written in Braille script for Class six students.

Besides the poem, a chapter on Helen Keller, the deaf and blind American woman who became a role model for millions of people, will also be added.

Reacting, an elated Mr Ghai said it is the biggest award and compliment to his film. ''Learning sign language will develop children's communication skills.'' NCERT Director Krishna Kumar said the example of Khadija (Iqbal's sister) who plays a crucial role in her brother's life because she knows sign language, prompted the NCERT to implement the idea.

The chapter on sign language will have a chart of symbols and children will be asked to communicate through them. The NCERT team has sought write ups from special schools and asked experts to collect signs from various dance forms like Kathakali.
