Men hunted for attack on deaf woman

A 36-year-old woman was attacked in St Martin's churchyard, off Micklegate, in the early hours of Sunday. Police have revealed that the victim was deaf and was unable to shout for help during her ordeal.

A force spokesman said the woman was left extremely traumatised by the assault and was being comforted at home by specially trained officers.

She had left the nearby Reflex bar at about 1am with a man she had met earlier that night and officers believe a further five men joined in the assault on the woman in the churchyard.
Detectives want to trace three men who helped the distressed victim after the attack but, because of a speech impediment linked to her disability, may not have realised what had happened to her.

A Good Samaritan found the woman in Micklegate and put her in a taxi home to the Huntington Road area.

Officers want to speak to him and the taxi driver and a male passenger who was already in the car.

"Now that those three men know the full circumstances we feel they must come forward to help," said the police spokesman.

Police also are keen to talk to anyone who was in the Micklegate area between 9pm on Saturday and 6am on Sunday, including people who were in Reflex on Saturday night and may have seen the woman, her two female companions and the man she left with. The woman is white, 5ft 6in, with wavy, highlighted blonde hair. She was wearing black trousers and a black jacket, with a white polo shirt.

The man who took her to the churchyard is described as white, 5ft 11in tall, with spiky, gelled black hair. He was aged between 26 and 30 and was wearing a black, hooded jacket and dark trousers.
