Now 'Happy Birthday' will sound better

Joe Papst moved into the digital age for his 100th birthday. Papst, 99, was fitted for a brand new digital hearing aid on Friday at Audiology Services and Hearing Aid Center, 530 E. Broadway. The hearing aid was a birthday gift from Audiology Services and Widex, the Long Island, N.Y., company that makes the digital device.

Born in Red Oak on Jan. 29, 1906, Papst said that he has spent most of his life in Iowa. The Neola resident has five generations behind him.

"This was a nice opportunity for us to do something for (Papst)," said Sharlene Pekny, president of Audiology Services.

Papst, who is remarkably spry for a man about to become a centenarian, said that he still does what he wants.

"You can't do what other people tell you to do," Papst said. "I'll do what I want and you do what you want to."

When asked what he attributes his longevity to, Papst replied with a smile, "Good looking women and good whiskey."

Even at 99, Papst said that he still takes a nip of whiskey occasionally.

He said that he was looking forward to spending the holidays at his daughter's house in Underwood. She is one of his five children, all of whom, he said, have turned out well.

"They all take good care of me," he said.

And now with his new hearing aid, he can enjoy the holidays in 21st century sound.
