2 Lions honored for service
Two members of the Bettendorf Lions Club recently were honored for their service to the club and to the community. Tom Stelk and Bob Rainey received the Iowa Lions Foundation’s Warren Coleman Honorary Award in recognition of their commitment to the club’s mission. The award is named for former Executive Secretary-Treasurer Warren Coleman of Oskaloosa, Iowa, who gave freely of his time and dedication to the Iowa Lions Foundation.
The foundation supports several causes for which Lions Clubs are especially known — sight and hearing programs, such as the Iowa Lions Eye Bank, the U. of Iowa Cochlear Implant Center, the Iowa School for the Deaf, the Iowa School for the Blind, the Leader Dog program, vision screening for young children, and camps for vision and sight-impaired persons.
The Warren Coleman Award is given to members who demonstrate exemplary service, and it can only be made possible by a contribution of $1,000 or more by a Lions Club to the Iowa Lions Foundation. The awards presented to Stelk and Rainey represent two donations of $1,000 each made by the Bettendorf Lions Club in 2004 and 2005. Each honoree received a special plaque and a lapel pin acknowledging his humanitarian service.
Stelk joined the Bettendorf Lions Club in 1976 and has served in a variety of leadership positions and on many community service and fundraising projects. He has been the club’s treasurer for many years and has led the club’s annual involvement in helping to fund the Bettendorf Fourth of July fireworks display.
Rainey joined the Bettendorf Lions in 1990 and has served in several leadership positions, including secretary, which means he keeps the club connected to Lionism in Iowa and to Lions Clubs International. Bob also has been active in the club’s community service and fundraising projects.
“I can think of no more deserving persons to be honored with this award,” Bettendorf club President said. “Their service to our community and to the causes of Lionism are outstanding.”
