Baby time
Cache County’s first newborn of ’06 doing well despite scary start to life. For Cache County’s first newborn of 2006, the first hours of life were a little scary, but all was well by the afternoon.
Landon and Mildred Leishman welcomed their baby boy, Louis Landon, into the world at 1:40 a.m. Sunday, marking the first Cache birth of 2006.
When Louis Landon was born, the umbilical cord was tightly wrapped around his neck and doctors had to keep him in the newborn intensive care unit throughout the day, but he was breathing on his own by the afternoon, and the proud parents were excited to get 2006 off to a good start.
"He’s a brave boy," Mildred Leishman said through a sign language interpreter. “He’s getting better and better. The cord was just wrapped around his neck.”
At 7 pounds, 6 ounces and 20 inches long, Mildred and Landon considered their newborn — Mildred’s fourth child, but the couple’s first together — a perfect bundle of joy.
"I adopted her other kids, so I’m so excited," Landon Leishman said through a sign language interpreter.
Mildred Leishman said having the first baby of the year was a surprise, but made the day extra special.
"It was strange to me that he was born on the new year," the new mother said. "I thought he would be born last night, but I was wrong."
Mildred said it was also nice that her parents, who live in Florida, were able to be in town for Louis Landon’s birth.
"I was lucky that he could be born while they were here still,” she said. “Now we’ll see what can happen for the rest of 2006 while he’s growing."
Landon and Mildred said they didn’t know if they’d be having more children together in the future, noting that it would depend a lot on Mildred’s health. But for now, at least, all their thoughts are on their new boy.
"We really would like six kids, but now it’s a big question because we’re not sure," Mildred said. "I don’t know, I’m not going to predict the future."
Landon and Mildred said they were particularly excited because they have a second boy to go along with their other boy, who is 9 years old. Their two girls are ages 12 and 4.
"It’s perfect," Mildred said.
