Pete Townshend going deaf

The Who rocker Pete Townshend is losing his hearing, and fears the disability will end his songwriting career. The musician, 60, blames his own brand of loud rock music for his increasing deafness, and is terrified the damage is irreversible.

But the guitarist is determined to create as much new music as possible, while he still can.

Townsend says, "I have unwittingly helped to invent and refine a type of music that makes its principal proponents deaf.

"This is a tour that rather depends on me writing new songs. The process has taken a long time. I've spoken about the problem of cracking the right material, but there is something else.

"I have terrible hearing trouble. Hearing loss is a terrible thing because it can not be repaired."
