Police find getaway vehicle in deaf man's murder

The mother and deaf girlfriend of a deaf man gunned down in Canoga Park by suspected gang members asked for the public’s help in finding the man’s murderers. Lee Carter, 23, was walking home from a store Tuesday night when four men confronted him. Police believe the suspects may have mistaken Carter’s sign language for gang signs, prompting the shooting in the 21000 block of Parthenia Street.

“The hardest part is I heard the shots,” said Carter’s mother, Yolanda Emanuel. She mentioned that gang members have previously confronted Carter due to his use of sign language.

“Let me know who killed my boyfriend. Call me or call the police,” said Carter’s girlfriend.

Detectives have seized a vehicle that is believed to have been involved in the shooting. The stolen vehicle is an older white Toyota Camry, was foiund abandoned at Chase Street and Remmet Avenue in Chatsworth.

Anyone with information about Carter’s death was asked to call police at the Devonshire Station at (818) 756-0669.
