Skype as a hearing aid?

I am hard of hearing and made a discovery today: I don't need to go out and by a hearing aid, at least not for use around the house. Skype provides the audio quality and solves the problem, at least for some things! Yes, the solution is a bit bulky. But I sometimes go to bed with my Pocket PC anyway, doing a last minute check on Email, or making a call to family in another time zone. Throughout the day I often use the Pocket PC for making Skype calls in comfort away from the PC work station.

Here is how it is done, note that if you don't already have the equipment it would be much more expensive than buying a hearing aid. First, you have a Pocket PC with Skype connected to your wireless access point (WiFi AP or wireless router). Then you have another computer in the house running Skype. Just call from the Pocket PC to the other computer, you will need a different Skype username for that and can set it up to answer automatically.

Provided the microphone plugged into the other computer is sensitive enough, and it does not need to be expensive, you are now in business. The simple cheap headphones used on one of our laptops is enough, the quality of sound pick up on its microphone is astounding. With the amazing audio quality of Skype sound on the Pocket PC as well as PC, even a pin drop in the room can now be heard with ease.

If I now need to know what my wife is saying, instead of using my poor hearing as an excuse, I can get out my Pocket PC, plug in the earphones, and call the other computer in the same room. With only the slightest delay, every sound is repeated and much clearer. In this way you get a 'second chance' and a very clear one at that at hearing what people are saying to you.

Not only that, I found that solves the problem of sitting up in bed watching TV while your partner is trying to sleep. Yes, just turn down the TV volume and place the computer microphone near the speaker. Now relax in bed with your Pocket PC on earphones and hear with clarity you had forgotten about as your hearing detiorated slowly but surely over the years.

Well, I better stop there before I find further uses that will have me plugged in - and thus engaged - on Skype longer than necessary!
