Vadodara team pockets deaf cricket tournament
The Vadodara team became the champion in the deaf cricket state tournament, after winning the final that was played at the Gujarat Refinery sports ground on Monday. Fast bowler Imran Sheikh got the Man of the Match and Man of the Series trophies. Twenty individuals from all the state teams were also selected on the occasion for participating in the National Championship to be held in Chennai between February 22 and 28.
In a tightly-contested match, the Ahmedabad team managed to score a paltry 87 before they were all out in less than 30 overs. In response, the Vadodara team also struggled, barely managing to scrape through with the required score at the fall of nine wickets. In all, seven teams participated in the state tourney held at the Gujarat Refinery and IPCL Sports grounds.
National coach Munna Singh, who is also the Gujarat team coach, was honoured with the ‘Dronacharya of Deaf’ award for his dedication to the deaf cricket, and his committed learning of the sign language to help the cricketers. Vadodara MP Jayaben Thakkar gave away the prizes.
The state tourney was sponsored by Gujarat Refinery with both corporates providing their state-of-the-art sports facilities for the teams.
