Hearing aids on the way to Tallahassee
Florida Citizens For Term Limits has announced a new campaign to improve the hearing of our legislators. The group has ordered more than 160 new hearing aids to help lawmakers get the voters' message. "The problem is Florida voters keep saying eight years, but the legislature is hearing 12 and 24 years," said the group's president, Max Linn.
"They're just not hearing the voters who cast their ballots by a solid 77% margin in favor of eight-year term limits, so we decided to help their hearing," Linn said today.
Hearing amplifiers will be delivered to the offices of every lawmaker at the opening of the session early this March. The devices will be a reminder to listen to the voice of the voters (specifically, for legislators who voted to extend term limits from 8 to 12 years.)
"Polls show that voters still support the current term limits law," Linn commented, "but lawmakers aren't listening. We are buying them hearing devices that have powerful amplifiers so they truly can hear the voice of the voters."
Florida Citizens For Term Limits is an organization conducting a statewide campaign to defeat the legislators' latest effort to extend their terms by changing the term limits law. "What is needed," says Linn, "is a change in the mindset of office holders. Rather than focusing on self-serving ambition and longer terms in office, our elected officials should respect the decisions of voters and concentrate on doing their duty to the people and leave office after eight years."
Florida Citizens For Term Limits will sponsor two of its own voter initiatives on the 2008 ballot. An initiative called 'Eight & Out,' would prevent politicians from running for any elected position for a five-year period after serving an eight-year term. "The initiative is intended to stop politicians from switching from the House to the Senate or vice versa when their terms have run out," says Linn. "Right now we don't have real term limits because politicians can defeat the spirit of the law by playing political musical chairs." The group will also sponsor a voter initiative in 2008 that calls for the end of taxpayer-funded pensions for politicians.

Florida Citizens for Term Limits means no disprespect to the hearing impaired. We recognize that hearing loss is a serious problem and do not intend to make light of the issue. However we do take issue with legislators that do not listen to the voters. We are using a toy form of hearing amplifier to make the simple, satirical point that that legislators are apparently unable to listen to the voters.
