Help available for deaf, hard of hearing

Grandma can't hear well enough to use the telephone. What can she do? Johnny's recurring ear infections have resulted in permanent hearing loss. Now he can't hear his classmates or his teacher very well. Is there a program to help him? A young deaf man is in my business class in college. A woman types everything that is said and it is displayed onto a screen. Who pays for that service?

Why was there a sign language interpreter at the library story time?

My neighbors are deaf. I wonder how they know when the city's severe weather siren goes off?

My mother wanted to try the listening device at a play production but the batteries weren't charged. What good are the listening devices if they can't be used?

These and other questions can be answered by the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services, Office of Deaf and Hard of Hearing, which helps people understand the rights of Wisconsin residents who are deaf, hard of hearing or who function with vision and hearing loss.

Regional coordinators for the Office of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing help to supervise equal communication access in medical, mental health, dental, legal, social service, workplace and school settings.

Coordinators are called to consult, refer and provide training on behalf of the deaf or hard-of-hearing person.

A variety of equipment and/or services may be requested to support effective communication. Examples include: qualified interpreters, note takers, text telephones, telephone handset amplifiers, assistive listening devices, telephones compatible with hearing aids and captioning.
