When baby talk equals flying fingers

Two Port Macquarie mothers hope to break into the publishing world with their educational kit on baby sign language. Gina Mansfield, a casual teacher, and Jodi Scantlebury, a massage therapist met at an ante-natal class three years ago. The 32-year-olds became interested in the art of communication with their babies a year ago but thought the books available were too difficult.

They simplified baby signing and devised face-to-face lessons but found most mothers didn't have time for classes.

So the two are launching an educational kit called 2 Hands Talking: Communicate With Your Child Before They Can Speak and are now searching for a publisher.

Gina writes the educational material while Jodi handles the business side of the enterprise known as The 2 Hands Network.

"When I've got a day off work and Charlotte's asleep, I'm at the computer madly working away trying to get this off the ground," Mrs Mansfield said.

"I'm spending a lot of time editing and re-editing.

"It's been a massive learning curve but we've got very clear, grand plans. We want to be published and saleable in bookshops within 12 months."

Their educational kit teaches 80 signs but they are also in the midst of putting together a dictionary of 700 signs.

Their form of signing is not used with deaf children and is supposed to develop speaking skills as well as helping communication.

"From 10 months Charlotte could tell me when she was hungry, thirsty and tired," Mrs Mansfield said.
