Fourth Florida lawmaker refuses to accept political hearing aid in term limits campaign
Voter Voice Amplifiers will be delivered to the offices of 123 lawmakers at the opening of the 2006 legislative session, March 7th at the capitol in Tallahassee. These satirical hearing devices will remind politicians of their failure to listen to the will of the voters on term limits. Florida voters cast their ballots overwhelmingly in favor of eight-year term limits in 1992, but 127 legislators defied the electorate by voting to give themselves twelve years in office.
So far four lawmakers, Representative Leslie Waters, Senator "Skip" Campbell, Representative Susan Goldstein, and Senator Larcenia Bullard, have declined to accept the specially designed legislative hearing aids.
The President of Florida Citizens For Term Limits, Max Linn will be available to the media before the devices are presented on Tuesday, March 7th at 9:00 AM on the Old Capitol steps.
"The problem is that Florida voters keep saying eight years, but the legislature is hearing 12 and 24 years," said the group's president, Max Linn. "They're just not listening to voters who cast their ballots by a solid 77% margin in favor of eight-year term limits," Linn says.
"Polls show that voters still support the current term limits law," Linn commented. "We are delivering hearing devices so even politically tone-deaf legislators can hear the voice of the voters."
Florida Citizens For Term Limits is an organization conducting a statewide campaign to defeat the legislators' latest effort to extend their terms by changing the term limits law.
ENDING TAXPAYER FUNDED PENSIONS FOR LEGISLATORS
Florida Citizens For Term Limits will sponsor two of its own voter initiatives to toughen term limits laws. One initiative is called 'Eight & Out.' This would prevent politicians from running for any elected position for a five-year period after serving an eight-year term. The second initiative calls for the end of taxpayer-funded pensions for politicians, to put a stop to political careerism .
