RNID Conference tackles healthcare barriers
Breaking down the barriers faced by Scots with hearing problems will be discussed at a major conference being held in Edinburgh today. Delgates at the RNID Scotland seminar will look at making it easier for hearing impaired people to access healthcare and a range of other issues.
Spokesman Doug Bradley explained what some of those issues are: "When a deaf or hard of hearing person goes to the doctor they are often not able to communicate exactly what is wrong with them and that can manifest itself into further problems."
He continued:"It can affect their mental health in the long run because if your not able to communicate with your doctor whether it's something purely simple from an ache or a pain then you're actually going to start to suffer in the sense that your not actually communicating what's wrong with you."
One in seven people in Scotland have difficulty in hearing.
