Hearing loss seminar set
Brazosport College will host a free half-day workshop on hearing loss from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. May 5 in its Community Education Center, 120 Circle Way, in the Four Corners Shopping Center. The workshop, “Hearing loss: empower yourself; know the possibilities,” is sponsored by the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services, Office for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services.
Three professional continuing education credits will be offered to audiologists, speech-language pathologists, hearing aid dispensers and occupational therapists. The workshop also is appropriate for physical therapists, people with hearing loss, their family, friends and anyone with an interest.
Topics to be discussed include the psychosocial issues involved with hearing loss, communication strategies in the work place and home, accessibility issues, devices and resources. Captioning will be provided so everyone will be certain to hear and understand everything that is said.
Presenters will be Teri Wathen, a hard of hearing specialist at Communication Axess Ability Group, and James F. Northcutt, a deaf/hard of hearing regional specialist who has extensive knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Wathen has had progressive hearing loss all her life, and her husband has noise-induced hearing loss from firing weapons in the Army. Their two sons and grandson all have hearing loss, as well.
For information, call (866) 353-7268 or e-mail teri.wathen(at)axsability.com.
