Deaf man arested after alleged scuffle with cops
A deaf homeless man attacked a police officer who was trying to usher the man out of a Concord Street home on Tuesday, police said. Edward Mullholand, 41, hit an officer in the arm, despite his friends telling him to stop, Lt. Paul Shastany said.
"The witnesses were yelling at Mullholland and said, ’The police are being nice to you,’" Shastany said. "He is deaf, but he is able to read lips and his friends can communicate with him, so he knew what was going on."
Police went to 346 Concord St. at 7:34 p.m. because the resident said Mullholand would not leave her house, Shastany said.
Police arrived and said they found Mullholland out back drinking liquor with a few friends.
The officers repeatedly asked Mullholand to leave, but he refused to do so, Shastany said.
"He became angry and got into a boxing stance," said Shastany. "Mr. Mullholand’s body tensed up and he began yelling as he approached the officer."
Mulholland struck Officer Felipe Martinez’s arm, but the officer grappled with the man and arrested him, Shastany said.
Mullholland was charged with assault and battery on a police officer and trespassing.
