Deaf ice climber falls to death

An ice climbing accident Sunday claimed the life of a Colorado Springs man who fell more than 200 feet. The 31-year-old man and a friend were working out their route down the ice at a popular climbing spot in the foothills near Colorado Springs.

The climber slipped and fell from the area off Old Stage Road in Cheyenne Canyon, southwest of the Broadmoor Hotel.

"Climbers at the scene did CPR and called 911," said Steve Sperry with the El Paso County Search and Rescue.

Search and rescue teams spent the afternoon bringing the body up the mountain.

Witnesses said the victim wasn't wearing ice crampons, which help grip the terrain.

Authorities had not released the name of the victim as of Sunday evening. The climbers were from the Deaf and Blind School.
