Doctor gives the gift of hearing to contest winner

Dr. Amy Sapodin, an East Meadow resident and co-owner of Advanced Hearing Center in Albertson, recently presented Viola Soroka of New Hyde Park, the winner of a raffle contest, with a free high-tech Widex Hearing Device valued at $ 2,400.

During Better Hearing Month in May, Soroka, 88, attended the educational seminar sponsored by Advanced Hearing Center and entered its raffle. She has suffered moderate sensory neural hearing loss in her right ear for the past 16 years.

Her hearing aid was lost about a year ago and was not replaced because of the high cost of the devices.

The raffled Widex Flash hearing aid features Integrated Signal Processing (ISP), which provides sharper, clearer and more natural sounds in all environments. Dr. Sapodin said, ³With the ISP feature, our patients can hear the softest sounds even when there is background noise. It is so small that it¹s hardly noticeable.

After testing out her new hearing aid, Soroka said, ³I¹m thrilled and surprised to have won this new hearing aid. Using the device, I find that I am more patient in social circles and don¹t have to concentrate as hard to understand conversations. It is certainly doing its job.

To insure that Soroka can hear at optimal levels, Dr. Sapodin is fine tuning the volume of the Widex device over the next several months. She said that Soroka will have several appointments with the goal of increasing the hearing levels so she can hear even better as she becomes more accustomed to the device.

At Advanced Hearing Center, with offices in Floral Park, Queens and Albertson, L.I., Dr. Sapodin diagnoses and treats hearing loss as well as performs hearing aid evaluations, testing and maintenance and dispenses hearing aids, listening devices and custom ear molds.
