Deaf Toddler Wanders Off; Mother Charged

A toddler who can't hear or speak is in the custody of Florida Child Protective Services after he was found wandering the streets of Miami on Sunday, police said.

His mother is charged with child neglect, police said.

The 18-month-old boy was found wandering around Northwest 67the STREET and 10th Avenue about 11:40 a.m.

Police searched the area for the child's parents or guardians before taking him to the police station.

About an hour later, the boy's mother woke up and realized the child was gone, police said.

After questioning the mother, social workers took custody of the boy. Police arrested his mother, 27-year-old Shenika Vicks. She is charged with one count of child neglect, police said.
