Foxy Brown's Request for Deaf Ear Check Denied in Court
Feisty rapper Foxy Brown suffered a major blow Thursday (Jan. 24) when a Manhattan judge rejected her petition for a premature end to her yearlong jail stint in order to travel to California for medical attention.
Jailbird Foxy Brown wanted to go to California to have her ears checked and for repair of an electronic ear implant, but Acting Justice Melissa C. Jackson of the New York State Supreme Court denied her request, saying the rapper can have her ears treated right here in New York City.
Judge Melissa Jackson said she will not allow Brown go to Los Angeles' House Ear Clinic, the center where she received her initial treatment for the sudden hearing loss, for the exam and repair of a defective cochlear implant as the rapper "failed to provide proof" that a coast-to-coast trip was necessary.
The 29-year-old American rapper, whose real name is Inga Marchand, complained that her hearing problems were worsening in prison and that she may face serious harm unless she receives repair and reprogramming of the cochlear implant .
"I am terrified of not hearing a fire alarm go off, or being locked in a cell and someone not being kind enough to let me out, since not everyone understands the severity of my condition," Brown said.
Prosecutors, however, said she could get the required treatment in NYC. In order to get treated in New York Brown will have to get the approval from the Department of Corrections, and then the Department of Health.
Foxy Brown is serving a one-year sentence behind bars for violating her probation that stemmed from the 2004 fight with two manicurists in a New York City nail salon. She has been in lockup on Rikers Island since September. Brown was put on probation after pleading guilty to misdemeanor assault of two manicurists at a Manhattan nail salon back in August 2004.
Brown, on August 29, 2004, allegedly attacked two manicurists in Chelsea, Manhattan during a dispute over a $20 bill that she refused to pay. On October 25, 2006, the rapper was sentenced to three years probation and anger management counseling.
